Your First Steps After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Mesothelioma is almost always linked to asbestos exposure, often decades earlier. It’s most common in people who worked in industries such as shipbuilding, engineering, demolition, or factory work where asbestos was widely used.

  • Take time to understand your diagnosis and history of asbestos exposure.
  • Provide clear and simple guidance on the legal process.
  • Offer advice on what steps to take next and how we’ll support you.

You can rely on us to handle the complexities, allowing you to focus on spending time with your loved ones.

Why starting now matters

Pursuing Mesothelioma compensation is essential to help relieve the financial and emotional burdens faced by those affected by this asbestos-related illness together with the loved ones they leave behind.

The Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme (DMPS) was launched throughout the UK in 2014. It provides payments to eligible people diagnosed with mesothelioma (or their eligible dependents) who were negligently exposed to asbestos during a period of employment. The DMPS is paid for via a levy on the employers’ liability insurance industry.

Step 2 – Information Gathering

It will be necessary to gather information from you regarding your diagnosis in order to link your condition to the employment where you were exposed to asbestos. Here’s what we’ll do:

  • Review your work history and medical records to establish a clear link to asbestos exposure.
  • Arrange independent medical assessments, if required, to strengthen your case.
  • Help gather critical evidence, such as employment records, expert witness reports, and any other documentation necessary to build a strong claim.

Our team will handle the legal complexities, providing you with clarity and reassurance throughout the process.

Step 3 – Medical Assessment

We will arrange an assessment with a specialist Chest Physician in order to fully document your diagnosis and its effects.

Step 4 – Compensation

We will work to secure the maximum possible payout for you and your loved ones. We will focus on:

  • Skilled negotiation with responsible parties to secure fair compensation.
  • A proactive approach to resolving your claim efficiently and effectively.
  • Full management of all paperwork, ensuring the process is as hassle-free as possible.

Once we secure a satisfactory settlement, we ensure a smooth and prompt payout straight to your account. You can trust us to handle your case with care and professionalism.

Roughly 50 people are diagnosed with the condition each year in Northern Ireland. Most of these cases are diagnosed in people aged 60 to 80.

Employers with Historical Asbestos Exposure in Northern Ireland

There have been many claims for asbestos related illnesses in Northern Ireland against the following employers:

  • Harland and Wolff, Belfast (including various subcontractors)
  • Northern Ireland Electricity
  • Power Stations including Ballylumford Power Station, Courtaulds Power Station and Coolkeeragh Power Station

Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Secondary asbestos exposure happens when someone is indirectly exposed to asbestos fibres, often through a family member who works around asbestos. These tiny, adhesive fibres can attach to clothing, shoes, or skin, making it easy for them to be brought into the home and pose a risk to other household members.

This type of exposure may occur, for instance, when a spouse handles and washes work clothes from someone employed in construction, shipyards, or other asbestos-heavy environments. Children can also be at risk by simply hugging a parent returning from such workplaces.

Can I Make a Claim for a Loved One Who Has Passed Away or Is Unable to bring their own claim due the effects of the disease?

If a loved one has passed away from an asbestos-related illness, MMC Legal may be able to assist you in securing compensation for their pain, suffering, and any financial losses resulting from their death and getting the answers and apologies you deserve from those responsible.

You may be eligible to make a claim if you are the spouse, child, or a financially dependent relative of the deceased. Generally, there is a three-year time limit to file a claim from the date of their death. If a post-mortem revealed that asbestos exposure was the cause, you have three years from the date you became aware of this finding to make a claim.
